‘Spider-Verse’ Spinoff ‘Spider-Punk’ Reportedly in the Works With Daniel Kaluuya

Exciting news for animated superhero fans: a spinoff from the Spider-Verse, titled Spider-Punk, is in development. It will be co-written by Daniel Kaluuya and Ajon Singh, according to Deadline.

The plot details are still being worked out, but the upcoming film will highlight the punk-rock version of Spider-Man, named Hobie Brown, who uses his guitar as his primary weapon. Kaluuya’s character first appeared, along with various other Spider-Man versions, in the multiversal film Across the Spider-Verse. He is set to return in Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.

In the comics, Spider-Punk is a fairly recent creation: Dan Slott and Olivier Coipel invented him in 2015 as a punk, alternate-universe version of an established character. Hobie resides on Earth-138 and uses his guitar as his main weapon in his never-ending battle to take down corrupt systems.

Sony’s “Spider-Verse” films have been major successes. The original, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, released in 2018, grossed $384 million and won an Oscar for Best Animated Feature. Its sequel, Across the Spider-Verse, earned over $690 million worldwide and received an Oscar nomination. The final film, Beyond the Spider-Verse, will be released on June 25, 2027.

Before starting production on Brand New Day, the next Tom Holland-led Spider-Man film set for July 31, 2026, and ahead of Beyond the Spider-Verse, Sony is expanding its live-action Spider-Man universe with Spider-Noir, a spinoff series starring Nicolas Cage, scheduled to premiere next year.

Daniel Kaluuya gained recognition in 2017 for his Oscar-nominated role in “Get Out.” Since then, he has starred in “Black Panther,” “Widows,” “Nope,” and won an Oscar for “Judas and the Black Messiah.” He made his directorial debut with Netflix’s “The Kitchen” and is currently developing a live-action “Barney” movie with A24 and Mattel.
